TELL US YOUR STORY
My journey in Australia began in 2006 when I arrived from Colombia with the simple goal of studying English for eight months before returning home. I didn’t speak the language, and I didn’t know anyone here — I had no contacts, just a desire to learn and grow. What I didn’t expect was to fall in love with the country. Australia welcomed me with its diversity and the incredible opportunities it offers to those willing to work hard. What was meant to be a short visit soon became a life-changing chapter.
I began studying English, immersing myself in a new culture and language. One of the most pivotal moments in my early days happened on a train — when I took a chance to speak with someone, hoping to practise my English. By pure luck, that person turned out to be a friend of a clinical manager. She gave me her contact, and within a week, I secured my very first job in Australia as a nurse assistant. It was the beginning of my career here and a beautiful reminder that kindness and courage can open doors.

Determined to grow, I continued to pursue my passion for healthcare. I first obtained my nursing registration in New Zealand, and shortly after, my registration in Australia. While working as a Registered Nurse, I pursued further studies, beginning with a Bachelor of Naturopathy. I then completed postgraduate training in general practice and eventually earned my Master’s degree, which allowed me to qualify as a Nurse Practitioner.
Today, I focus on combining conventional and natural therapies to support patients holistically. I also advocate for the Nurse Practitioner role in Australia, helping to demonstrate the value of this evolving profession within the broader healthcare system. Currently, I am collaborating with other practitioners and organisations on a clinical trial focused on oncology patients. This project reflects my commitment to evidence-based integrative care and the ongoing improvement of patient outcomes in cancer treatment.
From arriving alone with no English to leading a clinic and contributing to clinical research, my journey is a testament to the opportunities Australia offers and the power of persistence, passion, and purpose.
CHALLENGES
Being away from family and friends - One of the hardest challenges I faced was leaving my family and close friends behind in Colombia. Moving to a new country alone is emotionally overwhelming, and not having the daily support of loved ones can be incredibly isolating. I overcame this by building strong relationships within the local community and healthcare environment. Over time, these connections became my second family. I also stayed closely connected with my loved ones back home through regular calls and visits when possible.
Sandra loves attending conferences to provide the latest treatments for her patients at her clinic.
Arriving alone and not speaking the language - When I arrived in Australia, I didn’t speak English and knew no one. Navigating everyday tasks — like taking public transport or understanding paperwork — was daunting. But I was determined to learn. I enrolled in English classes at Melbourne University and made a conscious effort to practice every day, even if it meant facing awkward moments. Gradually, I gained confidence, and the language barrier became less intimidating. That persistence helped me gain my first job and start building a life here. Sandra not only overcame the challenge of learning English at Melbourne University but has since gone on to contribute her own story to the University’s community of students and professionals. Her experience is featured in the Graduate Certificate in Primary Care Nursing student stories, where she shares insights about resilience, adaptability, and the value of integrative care.
Professional challenges and career resilience - In my profession, I’ve faced several significant challenges, including colleagues who didn’t support my growth or believe in my role as a Naturopath and Nurse Practitioner. At times, I felt discouraged, but I used those moments as fuel to keep pushing forward. I remained committed to my education, upskilled continuously, and stayed focused on my long-term vision. Eventually, I founded my own practice where I now lead with integrity and advocate for a more inclusive, forward-thinking approach to healthcare.
PIECE OF ADVICE
Sandra promotes spending time in nature as one of several approaches to support healing.
For someone thinking of moving to Australia - Be open-minded and embrace the unknown. Australia is full of opportunities, but success comes with patience and perseverance. Don’t be afraid to start small — every experience counts. Learn the language, connect with your community, and stay focused on your goals. The journey may be challenging at first, but it’s truly worth it.
To inspire someone to become a success story in Australia - Believe in yourself, even when others don’t. Set clear goals, work hard, and never stop learning. Success in Australia often comes from resilience, adaptability, and determination. Use every obstacle as a lesson, and don’t be afraid to take risks. Trust that with time and effort, your story will become one of inspiration.
Remember that every challenge is temporary. Don’t be afraid to ask for help — there is always support available. Focus on small steps each day, and celebrate every bit of progress. Surround yourself with people who uplift you, and never lose sight of your purpose. Tough times build strength, and you are stronger than you think.
